Moho and LAB Across the Western Alps (Europe) From P and S Receiver Function Analysis

In spite of numerous active and passive seismological investigations, the existence continuous or interrupted continental subduction below Western Alps is still open to debate. Many observations focus on Moho deeper part mantle, while reliable information Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Boundary (LAB) Alpine region scarce. Exploiting data from dense, broadband AlpArray Seismic Network we present a set Receiver Function (RF) measurements LAB encompassing Alps, which includes Ivrea Geophysical Body (IGB), fragment mantle placed at few kilometers depth collision margin between Eurasia Adria plates. We derive seismic velocity profiles crust-uppermost each station down about 250 km, through joint inversion P S RF. constrain lateral variations topographies across colliding plates, quantify errors related our measurements. Our results allow us considerably expand published add unique new LAB. show that lithospheres have comparable thickness (on average 90–100 km), are IGB, not presently continuously subducting Adria. These suggest there gap superficial (continental) European lithosphere deep (oceanic) lithosphere, confirming discontinuous structure imaged by some tomography models.
